Itinerary
0900hrs we start our tour in the inner city of Paramaribo, a Unesco world heritage site since 2002. We will visit the historical building complex, Fort Zeelandia. The fort was originally started in the early 1600’s by the British when they controlled Suriname between 1650 and 1667. We continue the trip by foot and visit the Independence Square surrounded by historical buildings including the Presidential Palace, the Palm Gardens and Lim a Po Street, one of the most beautiful streets in Paramaribo. After this walk, we drive along the most prominent historical buildings with their unique architecture. We will make a stop at the Synagogue and Mosque that are right next to each other and shares a parking lot. Our next stop will be the Cathedral. This is the highest wooden building in the Western Hemisphere. Our City Tour ends at the Waterkant along the Suriname River, the favorite meeting place in Paramaribo for many Surinamese.
Lunch will be served at a local restaurant.
We continue to Commewijne district which is situated right across the river from Paramaribo. The tour takes you along former colonial plantations, which have now become residential areas. Plantation Peperpot is one of the preserved plantations.
We make a stop for a visit and also the workers’ living area called a Kampong. We also visit the nature park at the plantation where we can enjoy the bird life and small rainforest animals, such as monkeys. After Peperpot, we will visit the outdoor museum at Fort Nieuw Amsterdam. Fort Nieuw Amsterdam is situated in a strategically very important location: where the Commewijne and the Suriname Rivers meet, close to the ocean. The large fortress was originally constructed by the British as a defense for the plantations upriver, along both rivers. The fortress was originally an earthwork construction. It has the shape of a polygon (five equal sides) and features five bastions. At the outdoor museum, we can visit several restored buildings, including the gunpowder storage building from 1740 and the coach house with a few coaches dating back to the 19th century.
After the tour, transfer back to your selected hotel. (Hotel accommodations in Suriname can be provided at an additional cost.)
Today we’ll begin our journey from Paramaribo, via the indigenous village, Powakka, to Jodensavanne. A historic settlement of Portuguese Sephardic Jews fleeing the Inquisition. The first synagogue of the “New World” was built here. There are no remains present of this wooden building. The Portuguese Jews took their knowledge and expertise of growing and processing sugarcane, learnt in Brazil and Madeira, to Suriname and set up sugar plantations. From the English authorities, they were granted the freedom to practice their religious rituals and customs. Those privileges were later ratified by the Dutch. The first stone synagogue in Suriname, Beracha Ve Salom (Blessing & Peace), was built in 1685. You can still see the foundations of this synagogue.
