Itinerary
Board the scheduled Gumair flight from Eugene F. Correia International Airport in Guyana to land at Zorg-en-hoop airport in Paramaribo. (0815hrs or 1215hrs flight)
Pick up at the airport and transfer to the pier at Leonsberg where we will be picked up for the Sunset Dolphin tour. While having a drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic), we enjoy the cool breeze and river views. Meanwhile, the captain searches the horizon for the dolphins. Normally, we see them swim by in groups of up to 20 dolphins. Sometimes they’re very curious, and if we are lucky, they will jump and play close to the boat.
After having enjoyed this playful company, we depart for the wonderful restored plantation Rust & Werk, where we will go for a walk in the village. Here, the descendants of the contract workers from Indonesia live; we call them the Javanese people. After the sun has set, we will get back on board, pour a drink, and enjoy a local snack, slowly making our way back to Leonsberg. Transfer to your hotel.
Eco Torarica combines culture and nature at its best. You will find the historic center of Paramaribo and the bustling entertainment center in just 5 minutes. In our tropical garden, you can spot colorful, exotic birds and impressive iguanas. This makes our hotel ideal for anyone who likes to immerse themselves in the culture and nature of Suriname.
Overnight in a standard room at Eco Torarica. (Check-in 1500hrs, check out 1200hrs noon).
Breakfast at Eco Torarica
Commence your day with a guided tour in the inner city of Paramaribo, starting with a visit to the historic building complex, Fort Zeelandia. Enjoy an extensive guided tour provided by our knowledgeable guide. Continue the trip by foot, exploring Independence Square surrounded by historical buildings, including the Presidential Palace, the Palm Gardens, and Lim a Po Street, known for its beauty in Paramaribo. After this walking tour, drive along the most prominent historical buildings, featuring unique architecture. Make a photo stop at the Synagogue and Mosque, situated right next to each other. The next stop is the Cathedral, the highest wooden building in the Western Hemisphere. The City Tour concludes at the Waterkant along the Suriname River, a favorite meeting place for many Surinamese.
Lunch will be served at a local restaurant.
Continue the tour to Commewijne, located across the river from Paramaribo. Explore former colonial plantations, many of which are now abandoned and have become residential areas. Visit the plantation Peperpot in the Commewijne district, on the right bank of the Suriname River. Explore the premises and the workers' living area called a Kampong. Optionally, visit the recently installed nature park at the plantation, famous for bird life and small rainforest animals, such as monkeys. After Peperpot, the next stop is the outdoor museum at Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, strategically located at the meeting point of the Commewijne and the Suriname River, close to the ocean. The large fortress, built by the British as a defense for the upper plantations, features several restored buildings, including the gunpowder storage building from 1740 and the coach house with coaches dating from the 19th century. In one of the ponds is the famous giant water lily, Victoria Amazonica.
After the tour, transfer back to your hotel. In the evening, you will be picked up and transferred to Peperpot Nature Park, where you will have the exclusive opportunity to enter the park after closure time when all wildlife awakens. Gather at 18:30 at the Discovery Center near the main entrance for a walk through the park with an experienced and specialized wildlife guide. Learn about the nocturnal wildlife of the area. We recommend wearing boots as the paths can get muddy, especially during the rainy season.
After the tour, return to your hotel. Overnight in a standard room at Eco Torarica. (BL: Breakfast, Lunch)
